Kentucky Students Celebrate Educational Freedom in Frankfort

Jan 25, 2024

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 25, 2024) – Students, Parents and Teachers from across Kentucky assembled in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort today to show their enthusiastic support for school choice.

Organized by EdChoice Kentucky, in collaboration with the National School Choice Awareness Foundation, the event was one of thousands of similar student-focused activities across the country during National School Choice Week, January 22-26th, 2024.

“We are so grateful to the pro-student leaders, parents, and advocates in Kentucky who are ready to make school choice a reality in our state,” said Moe Lundrigan, President of EdChoice Kentucky. “It can’t come soon enough as most of Kentucky's neighboring states already have school choice programs in place. Students need our help now. Kentucky must begin funding students, not systems.”

Nay Kaw, a graduate from Berea College and a former student of the West End Boys School and Louisville Collegiate, shared his experiences as a 7-year-old who didn’t speak English moving to the United States and the positive impact his educational career had on his life.

“I started taking ESL classes and my ESL teacher saw potential in me,” Kaw said. “When it came time to pick a middle school…she encouraged me to look into the West End School for Boys. The school was challenging, but it prepared me for high school. I had the opportunity to play sports, which I didn’t get to do in elementary school because of cost and transportation, and it was a small school so students could get the attention and help that they needed. Because of the preparation at West End School, I was able to get a full ride to Louisville Collegiate.”

Students from Dream Center Academy Christian School (DCACS) in Louisville, Ky., spoke about how their school has unlocked their potential and love of learning.

“On my first day of school I felt something that had been absent from me for a long time – feeling wanted, loved and welcomed at school,” said Serenti Mozee, a 7th grader at DCACS. “Having education choice has strongly impacted me, and it can strongly impact others.”
